Strategic communication must lead Scotland’s clean energy transition

The inaugural Scottish Renewables Communication Conference took place in Glasgow yesterday and made one thing clear: communication can no longer be a support function. It is a strategic driver of trust, understanding and progress. As Scotland accelerates its shift to a modernised energy system, the way we communicate will determine how quickly—and how confidently—we get there.

Breaking Out of the Echo Chamber

Several speakers warned that the energy industry still talks to itself. This internal echo chamber limits understanding, fuels mistrust, and leaves space for misinformation to flourish. Clear, outward‑facing communication—grounded in lived experience and local reality—must replace technical, inward‑looking narratives.

Local Insight Builds Better Decisions

Hyper-local understanding emerged as a defining theme. Whether through community presence, case studies, or lived experience, people need to see and recognise themselves in the story. National messaging alone can’t build trust. It’s the granular details that reflect real life—and accelerate social licence. 

Modern Communication Needs Modern Tools

With Scotland’s media ecosystem under pressure and misinformation spreading quickly across platforms like X, owned content is becoming indispensable. Blogs, animations, explainers, email updates and locally relevant storytelling allow organisations to own their narrative—and amplify it through paid, shared and earned channels. This is why the PESO model is so important  when we are creating strategic plans. It all supports each other when integrated.

At the same time, AI is reshaping information flows, yet many practitioners still feel unprepared to use it strategically. Modernising the sector is essential if we want to lead, not follow.

A Conversation Ready to Move Forward

The event created valuable space for reflection, and the conversations signalled a real opportunity for growth. Many of the themes touched on the fundamentals of good communication — which highlights a wider moment for the sector: we now have the chance to elevate how public relations and communication supports Scotland’s energy transition. With new tools, richer data and more dynamic channels available than ever, there is huge potential for practitioners to build deeper understanding, stronger influence and greater trust. By investing in upskilling and embracing modern approaches, the energy sector can sharpen its impact and communicate with confidence at the pace the transition demands
